Hon. Boma iyaye, Rivers state commissioner for sports has promised to speak to Governor Wike on behalf of Players and officials of 2017 Women’s Aiteo Cup and Nigeria Women Champions Shield winners, Rivers Angels while receiving the team at the sports ministry.
The Jewel of Rivers on Sunday won the maiden edition of the NWFL Champions Shield after beating 2017 league champions, Nasarawa Amazons 4-3 on penalties.
Team captain, Charity John while presenting the 2017 Aiteo Cup and the Shield to the Commissioner thanked the state government for the continued support and encouragement towards the team and assured the people of Rivers that team would continue with its winning culture this season.
“We are here to say thank you to the state government for all it’s been doing for us,” Charity began.
“The ministry, especially the Commissioner was very supportive to our success last season and we want him to keep up with it when we begin our campaign this year,” she added.
On his part, the Commissioner, Honorable Iyaye congratulated the team and urged them to win every title in the upcoming season as the state government will always throw its weight behind them.
“I want to congratulate you girls on your feat against Nasarawa Amazons last Sunday,” he said. “You’ve done well even though you missed out from the league title last season but you brought back the Aiteo Cup and now the Champions Shield.
“This shows that Rivers Angels remains the best among every other female team in the country,” added Iyaye. The Commissioner also promised to send a memo to the State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike on behalf of the team in spite of His Excellency’s busy schedule. “The Governor has been quite busy but I’ll send a memo to him on your behalf,” Iyaye said.
“With the governor being whom he is, I’m sure he’d approve whatever is placed before him for the team,” he summed. The Commissioner for Sports also handed out One Million Naira cash to the team to express his delight with their feat.
