El-Rufai: There're people around Buhari working against Tinubu's victory

Kaduna State governor, Nasir- el- Rufai on Wednesday said there are people around President Muhammadu Buhari working against the victory of the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the February 25 election.

El- Rufai spoke while reacting to hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the scarcity of new currency notes and scarcity of petrol on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise.

He said those working against Tinubu are not happy the person they preferred did not get the presidential ticket of APC

The Governor noted that the naira redesign policy has inflicted hardship on the people, especially those in the rural areas.

According to him, the CBN has refused to yield to demands to extend the period for phase out of the old notes, while the new notes are not available.

El-Rufai, who noted that people in some rural communities have resorted to trade by barter to overcome the difficulties of lack of the new naira notes, added that two local governments in Kaduna had no banking services.

He said the policy may turn the people against APC in the forthcoming election.

He, however, disowned the initiative, saying it is not part of the policy of APC.

The Governor also blamed refusal of President Buhari to support removal of petroleum subsidy for the scarcity of petrol as well as the economic problems facing the country.

He said the Governors has agreed that subsidy should go at one of the meetings of National Economic Council.

El-Rufai added that on his part, he met Buhari sometimes in 2021 and made a presentation to him on why subsidy should go.

He said the President agreed, but later reneged on the promise to stop the subsidy payments.

He said the President always argued that removal of subsidy will hurt the common man.
