According to the unsigned, unwritten zoning pact in Akwa Ibom State, the Governor of the State in 2023 should emerge from Uyo Senatorial District. Here are a few serious early birds in the gubernatorial race for the Governor’s Mansion.
Udom Inoyo (former Vice chairman, ExxonMobil Nigeria): Political newbie. Political platform undeclared though seen to be leaning towards the PDP. Said to be a close pal of Governor Udom Emmanuel. Perceived as elitist even though his family Foundation has been granting scholarships to indigenous students. He is going putting his political machinery quietly and obviously.
Senator John Udoedeghe (National Secretary, All Progressives Congress Caretaker Committee): popular strongman of Uyo grassroots political scene who has been in the gubernatorial race before. It is said that no politician can beat Udoedeghe in Uyo. Though he was not a gubernatorial candidate, the veteran APC stalwart and his political party were beaten in the last elections by Team Udom Emmanuel. He has been busy rebuilding his political structures for the 2023 race.
Akan Udofia (billionaire CEO, Desicon Group): Political newbie. Political platform undeclared though seen to be leaning towards the PDP. He has openly declared his intention to vie for the Governor’s Mansion in 2023 by publicly seeking the counsel of his village elders, informing them of his gubernatorial ambitions. Said to be a close pal of Governor Udom Emmanuel. Perceived as elitist, he been very visible on site in Akwa Ibom State during Q2 2021. Popularly called ‘OAU’ Obong Akanimo Udofia by admirers.
Senator Ita Enang (Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari): another veteran politician from the APC stable who has declared his gubernatorial ambitions for 2023. Very cerebral politician, he will have to contend with the Udoedeghe juggernaut in the Akwa Ibom State APC.
