Unknown gunmen riding in a Highlander SUV last night on Democracy Day about 9.30 pm shut and killed two Policemen at Elioparawon Junction of Ada George road in Obio Akpor local area of Rivers State.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen who may have trailed the Policemen in a white salon car to the spot opened fire at them in a point blank range and sped off disappearing into the thick darkness of the night.
The Eyewitnesses said the sound of the gun caused initial panic in the minds of residents and shop owners within the neighbourhood. Those who summoned courage to run to the scene of the incident found out that two Policemen were shot dead on the spot, while another was nursing bullet wounds and in critical condition.
Policemen later rushed to the scene and evacuated the corpses of their colleagues and the ones nursing bullet wounds.
When contacted, the Spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident and said that investigation has commenced assuring the Toyota Highlander SUV had been identified and the assailants would be tracked down.
He said: “Yes I am aware of the killing of two police officers around Ada-George, our men have identified the car that was used to carry out the attack. We have deposited the corpses at the mortuary, investigations have commenced to track down the perpetrators of that evil act against police men who were on their duties, we must get them.”
It would be recalled that a Soldier in mufti was shot dead by some Policemen attached to Ada George Police Station by Elioparawon axis on the May 17 leading to the sacking of the Ada George Police Station and arrest of the Divisional Police Officer, DPO. The situation caused pandemonium in the area.
Calm was restored after the intervention of both the Army and Police high commands in state.
