Peterside: FG Concerned About Security Challenges, Commends APC

Peterside

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside says the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has done well in the past three years since taking over the reigns of power.

Dr Peterside stated this in a live television programme on Silverbird Television, monitored in Port Harcourt, where he addressed issues surrounding insecurity, governance and politics.

He noted that what a lot of people see as internal combustion within the APC is part its evolving process where people with different tendencies struggle to realize their political ambitions, adding that all the issues are being resolved internally.

According to him, “APC as a party is still evolving, there will always be differences and there is no time when all the issues can be resolved, but we are doing and have done well.”

He admitted that some national leaders of the party may have some concerns but was quick to say that the relevant hierarchies of the party are addressing all the issues.

On the issue of farmers/herdsmen clash, he said the Federal Government was genuinely concerned about the security of lives and property, hence identifying the problem and seriously working out measures to arrest the ugly situation.

He noted that the issue of security breaches varies from one locality to the other, prompting the Federal Government to take multidimensional approaches to identify and resolve the root cause of each challenge.

According to him, “The Federal Government is concerned about it (insecurity), the government has identified the problem and it is being tackled. The government is not living in self-denial and that is very important. It didn’t start today and the government is looking at multidimensional approaches to resolving it.”

On whether the service chiefs should not have been sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari, the NIMASA boss countered that without first identifying the root cause of the various security challenges, sacking them might not solve any problem.

He stressed that information at the disposal of the president determines the kind of strategy to use and whether the service chiefs should be removed from office, pointing out that taking rash decisions because of opposition is not the best of response.
